How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

It is fairly easy to paint kitchen cabinets, but you need to keep a few things in mind. Basically, you need to employ the right materials so the paint will last.

Required Tools and Materials

Kitchen cabinet hardware
Trim paintbrush
Oil paint
Oil base primer
220 grit sandpaper
Saw horses or table
Screwdriver
Soap and water solution

Step 1

Take off the cabinet doors and put them on a table or saw horse. Remove the latches, hinges, doorknobs etc.

Step 2

Clean the wood surface with soap and water. There are also special wood cleaners available if the grease is heavy.

Step 3

Use the 220 grit sandpaper on the visible cabinet surface. This helps in making the paint stick. Smooth any rough spots.

Step 4

Put some oil based primer on the exposed surfaces. Before you paint kitchen cabinets, understand that oil based products are the best option for painting. The finish is durable. Latex paint is cheaper but it is not as effective.

Step 5

Allow the primer to dry then sand the surface again.

Step 6

Apply quality paint on the cabinet. The color and finish is up to you. For a light glossy finish, use a satin finish. The semi gloss has more gloss than the satin.

The gloss finish will produce the greatest shine. When painting, apply the coating as evenly as possible. Note: the paintbrush you use will have an effect on the finish as well.

Step 7

Paint a second coat over the first. This will give the cabinet a fuller look. To give it a smoother appearance, try painting with a small wiz roller while utilizing a foam roller cover. This is best applied on the face of the cabinet doors.

Step 8

Let the cabinet door dry then put in the new or existing hardware.

Tips and Warnings

Wear a face mask when painting so you do not absorb the paint. It is also important that you paint in a well ventilated room. Keep the working area clean so you do not lose any small parts. Put coverings on any nearby furniture so they do not get paint.

Make sure you give the cabinet sufficient time to dry. This will vary depending on how many coat layers you apply. Follow the time specified on the product.

If you are going to paint kitchen cabinets, it is best to start with one project at a time. Don’t start another one until the first is finished. This way you will keep the workplace clear and clutter free.
