One of the inexpensive ways of upgrading the appearance of a room is by installing vinyl tiles on the floor. These tiles are commonly installed in the wet parts of the house like the bathroom. Installing these tiles is easy but homeowners need to allot time to finish the project. It is important to allot time for floor layout and floor preparation. If you are interested in knowing how to install vinyl tiles flooring, just follow the simple steps that are discussed in this article.
Materials and Tools Needed
To start this project, you need vinyl tiles, a tape measure, a carpenter’s square, a utility knife and a floor leveler compound. In addition to these, you also need a wide bladed putty knife, tin snips, a flooring roller, a grinder or a belt sander, a cold chisel and a hammer.
Before you proceed with the installation of the tiles, you need to check the floor for damages like bumps, cracks as well as dips. If you find cracks or any damage on the floor, you should repair it immediately. If you will install the tiles on the bathroom, it is best if you removed the toilet so that you can put the vinyl flooring easily.
To repair cracks, dips and bumps on the floor, you can fix these by applying a primer layer. Spread the compound on the floor smoothly using a putty knife. If you cannot find a putty knife, you can use a trowel instead. To patch cracks and holes, you can repair this with the use of a sandpaper and a cold chisel. Sanding is also helpful in preparing a painted floor.
After preparing the floor, you can proceed with the tiles layout. To avoid experiencing troubles at the end of the project, it is essential that you start installing vinyl tiles on the center of the floor. Continue installing tiles until you reach the edges of the floor. To know the center, you need to divide the area into four. Use the square to locate the center.
To ensure that the tiles are installed firmly on the floor, you need to press the tiles using a tile roller. Cut the excess tiles with the use of a sharp utility knife. If there are gaps on the floor, you can fix by installing the moldings. After you are done with the installation, sweep the area and wipe the floor with a clean and dry cloth to see if there are still gaps on the flooring.
