How to Build a Closet

If you don’t want or can’t afford to buy one, learning to build a closet is a good option. You’ll need to prepare the following equipment.

Required Tools and Materials

Stud Finer
Air Compressor
Nail gun
Pen and paper (for drawing the closet system)
Wood boards
Cordless drill

Step 1

First of all you need to establish the dimensions of the closet. Aside from the height, width and depth you’ll need to consider other elements. This includes the door swing space and the areas where you’ll put your clothes. Also think of how much space is needed by the shelves.

Step 2

After getting the dimensions, purchase the wood boards and other materials. If it helps, illustrate the closet system on paper. Use this as a guide when you build a closet.

Step 3

Find the studs with the stud finder. Use the saw to cut the wood. Plug in the air compressor, air gun and air hose. Load them with 1½ brad nails.

Step 4

Cut the wood boards into 1 x 4 sizes. Put them in the wall along the studs you marked. Install the shelves using the 1¼-inch brad nails.

Step 5

Fasten the closet rod cup holders on the 1 x 4 side stringers. Cut the closet rod to the appropriate lengths. Set them in the cup holders.

Step 6

Put in the closet rod support brackets. When you build a closet, the space between the supports should not be more than 3 feet. Use the 1½-inch screws. To install these brackets, use the 1½-inch screws. Make the door, add the hinges and install it. Paint it if you want.

Note: Adjust the rod to make it two bars on the wall; this will give you more space. Do not proceed until you find the studs. Not marking them can cause damage to electrical wiring or plumbing.

Making Closet Shelves

If you want to make shelves, here’s how.

Required Tools and Materials

Hammer
Tape measure
Drill
6d ½ L brackets
Box of nails
3/4" x 10 1/2" wood

Instructions

Cut the wood boards according to the desired length. After the sides are cut, sand the edges. As you build a closet shelf, take note of the size of the closet itself; this will help you determine how many shelves you’ll need and what size it should be.

Nail the shelf to the closet. Make as many as necessary. When you’re finished, clear the area of dust and debris. Wear eye goggles to protect your eyes.

Tips and Warnings

Planning is very important; look at the size of your room and the stuff you need to put in. It’s much better to overestimate the size of the closet than getting one that is too small. After you make the closet, divide the closet into sections. This will help you organize the contents more easily.

After you build a closet, you can put your stuff in. Remember, you made it to organize your stuff, so don’t throw stuff there indiscriminately.
