How to Repair Dishwasher

Although some dishwasher problems require expert assistance, some common problems can be fixed at home. Here are some of the ways you can repair dishwashers.

Step 1

If it won’t run, try turning it off and on a few times. If it doesn’t work, the timer, door switch or selector switch may have to be replaced.

Step 2

If water doesn’t fill the dishwasher, check the float in the unit. The float is a plastic dome set on the base of the tub. If the float needs cleaning, remove it from the dishwasher.

Clean the float and the surrounding area. Wash it and put it back into place. You should also get rid of the dirt on the screen from the valves. This is just to the dishwasher’s front panel.

Step 3

You can also assess and repair dishwashers with a volt meter. If it refuses to stop filling with water, turn the dishwasher off. Remove the float and clean it if you haven’t already.

Put labels on the wiring so you don’t get confused when putting them back in. Configure the volt meter to Rx100. If the float is down, it should register a zero reading. If not, the float has to be replaced.

Step 4

If water isn’t being drained, examine it. If the water is clean, it means the pump isn’t functioning and the hose doesn’t bring the water to the drain. There is a clog if the water is dirty. Take out the air gap cover. Use a wire to clean it. Remove the drainer from the dishwasher. Use a brush to clean it.

Step 5

If there is a leak, examine the door gasket. Replace the gasket if it is damaged. Make sure you apply the right amount of detergent. Too much of it may cause leaks. Ensure the dishwasher is level; this will prevent leakages.

Tips and Warnings

Be certain the dishes are loaded properly. This will ensure the dishes will be washed in the right manner. If you don’t load the dishes right, all sorts of problems could occur. Do not attempt any repairs with the power on. Always make sure the dishwasher is
unplugged and has no power.

Knowing how to repair dishwashers can save you a lot of frustration. It can also save you money. Often, the problem is very easy to fix, so why pay someone to do it? By knowing where to look, you’ll know how to resolve the problem.
