Deck Design Tips

Having a deck in your yard creates a dedicated space for recreational activities and get-togethers with friends and family right in your own home. You can design and decorate your deck any way you want based on your style preference.

From simple designs with a few lounge chairs to more elaborate schemes complete with a hot tub; you can create the perfect deck that you and your family can enjoy.

Below are a few deck design tips that you may want to consider or at least give you ideas on what you can do with your deck.

Deck Design Tips

1. First of all, before you embark on your deck designing project, you should have a set budget in mind so you don’t go overboard. Determine all the things that you want to put in your deck: lounge chairs, hammock, plants, hot tub, tables and chairs for dining and such.

Knowing what items you may need to purchase will give you a ballpark figure of how much you could spend on your deck design.

2. Leveling. When designing your deck, one of the things that you should consider is the height of your deck. Ideally, it should be on the same level as your indoors. This way, there is a smooth transition as you go from the inside of your house out to the deck.

3. Glass sliding doors. Having glass sliding doors installed that opens up to your indoor space and deck will give you a good view of both sides: the indoor room from where your deck will be leading from, and the deck itself when you are indoors.

When you are indoors, you will still have a good view of the deck and the garden that overlooks it.

4. Check out the sun. It is good to check where the sun rises and sets to give your deck a good position, not having it exposed to too much sun and also not having it kept under the shade all day long.

This way, you can enjoy a bit of sunshine whenever you feel like lounging and tanning on your deck. If you are planning on installing a hot tub, knowing where the sun rises and sets will also help you choose the right spot for the hot tub for your deck.

5. Deck furniture. This is the fun part. You can choose to put in lounge chairs, benches, tables and a hammock to truly turn your deck into an all-around recreational area.

When choosing your deck furniture it is important to get water-resistant pieces as well as those that can withstand being out in the sun for prolonged periods of time. This will give your furniture a longer shelf life.
