How to Build a Beer Pong Table

Beer pong is a rather unusual yet increasingly popular drinking game that is played with 2 sets of beer-filled cups, each arranged in a triangle formation, on opposite sides of a table. A player will try to throw a ping pong ball into one of the cups of the other player, who will drink from that cup if the ball goes in. The game ends when one player sinks the ball in all of the other one’s cups. It’s a very easy game to set up; all one would need are a few cups, a lot of beer, a ball and a table. Any table will do, of course. But, just for kicks, one may want to build a proper beer pong table to play the game on.

The first thing to do is to pick out a suitable work space to build the beer pong table. The working area should be large enough and situated in a well-ventilated place, preferably a barn, a garage or even a warehouse. To begin building, apply wood stainer on a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood, as well as on four 2 x 4’s that will be used as the table’s leg supports. Be sure to follow the instructions on the wood stain bottle with regards to the period of time it will take until the stain dries off.

Once the stained plywood board is dry, place it under an enclosed area, flipping it over so that its bottom side is facing up. Position a 2 x 4 approximately 6” in from the board’s corners, and use a screwdriver to screw it in place on every side to keep it secure. Screw on the rest of the 2 x 4’s on the remaining corners of the board in the same manner. Afterwards, use 2 x 6 planks to fashion a skirt below the beer pong table, and screw on L-brackets to the 2 x 6’s to serve as reinforcement to keep the table from bending out of shape and to disperse its weight equally.

After building the actual beer pong table, the next step is to give it a unique look. After all, to just leave it looking as it is would make it just another table. Get the creative juices flowing and think of a cool design, then get some paint to apply those ideas onto the table. Use spray paint to give the table its main color, applying it in several coats.

Wait for the coat to dry before painting on the rest of the design in whatever colors that one desires. One may go nuts with it, or perhaps one may have a highly-detailed design in mind. Whichever the case may be, one may either do the painting freehand or one may use stencils to make sure it is perfectly rendered. Afterwards, let the paint dry and then coat the whole table with lacquer finish. Allow it to set before applying another layer of lacquer. This is to keep the design protected from getting worn out by the constant spill of beer. And with that, the beer pong table is finally complete and ready to set up for a game.
