Before you install a water softener, read the product directions. Usually however, the process will be very similar to the one outlined below.
Required Tools and Materials
Softener sodium chloride or potassium chloride salt
Lubricant
Softener resin
Gravel
Funnel
Masking tape
File or sand paper
Flexible tubing
Drain
Extension cord
3-prong, 120 volts grounded outlet (not regulated by a switch)
Water softener
Turn the water off on the shutoff valve. Turn off or disconnect the electricity on the water heater.

Open all the plumbing fixtures to drain the water lines. Do the same for outdoor plumbing.
Step 3
Set the water softener on a dry and even area. If it is a 2-tank softener, set the brine and resin tanks close to each other.
Step 4
To install a water softener, put the distributor tube in the mineral tank. The top has to be flushed with the tank. The screen intake has to be rested in the bottom center point.
Step 5
The tubes have to be taped to keep the beads from getting to the distributor tube. If gravel is included, put enough in the funnel to conceal the screen intake.
Step 6
Put the softener resin so the tank is ½ to ¾ full. Next, remove the tape off the distributor tube.
Step 7
Fasten the top basket to the underside of the control valve and to the mineral tank. Before attaching it to the tank head, lubricate the o-ring. The hole in the valve’s center will be a fit for the distributor tube. Fasten the tube with your hand. Move in a clockwise direction.
Step 8
To connect the water, join the bypass valve with the control valve. Do this by aligning their in and out arrows. Fasten the screws.
Step 9
Connect the water softener connection on the bypass. Fasten the 3/8 inch plastic tubing on the brine tank’s tubing. Run this in a drain.
Step 10
Put four gallons of water in the brine tank. Plug the control valve in. Put in 10 lbs of potassium chloride salt or sodium chloride.
Step 11
Position the softener on the bypass valve and backwash stage to the service spot. Turn the water supply valve on ¼ of the way.
When the flow becomes steady, open it all the way. After you install a water softener, put the softener into the whole backwash cycle. Check the softener if there are any fittings loose. Check also if there are any leaks. If the installation was correct, there will not be any problems.
