How to Repair a Gutter

How to Repair a Gutter

Paying someone to repair a gutter is not necessary in some cases. The following examples will demonstrate how these repair jobs can be accomplished on your own.

Fixing a Sagging Gutter

Required Tools and Materials

Hammer
Ladder
Caulk
Threaded gutter spikes
Brackets
Epoxy
Pry bar
Drill with driver
Wood slivers
Pliers
An assistant

For spike supported gutters:

Step 1

Use the pry bar to straighten the spike. Use a ladder if necessary. If spike is nailed, secure the spike head with the pliers. Tap it with a hammer until the spike is removed.

Step 2

Use the threaded gutter spike in place of the old one. If the fit isn?t loose, add some wood slivers layered with some epoxy.

If you have to repair a gutter on bracket, use the following method.

Step 1

Unclip the brackets and unfasten it from the downspout. You will need the help of at least 1 person.

Step 2

Put some caulk in the hole. After it dries, install another bracket (the bracket should be the same dimensions as the old one). Fasten the screws on. Repeat for other brackets. Put the gutter back in.

For gutters on hangers:

Step 1

For bent straps, bend it an inch up. This will be from the shingle?s edge (it could also be nailed on something else). Now pull it under the bend?s point.

Step 2

If you have to repair a gutter bracket or replace it, loosen the bracket from the gutter. Lift it up the shingles. Take out the nails.

Note: if the gutter is in concealed brackets, take out the mounting screw. Replace the old bracket if needed.

Removing Downspout Leaks

Required Tools and Materials

Silicone caulks
Flashing
Wire brush
Sandpaper
Plastic roofing cement

Step 1

Begin by taking out the sections that are causing the leak. Remove any dirt and debris with the brush.

Step 2

If the gutter is PVC, you may need to replace the gaskets. After putting a bead of silicone caulk on the joint, reassemble the gutter. If necessary, reconnect the gutter with some fasteners.

How to Repair a Gutter Railing Leak

The required tools and materials are the same as when fixing gutter leaks, except you need a bucket of water also.

Step 1

Remove dirt from the leaking section using water and wire brush. Allow this area to dry.

Step 2

Sand the section with the sandpaper. Spread plastic roofing cement over this part. Put about 3 inches all over the hole.

Step 3

Put the flashing on the cement. Firm the flashing on the cement. If necessary, feather the corners.

Tips and Warnings

The ladder you use needs to be a steady one. Do not use the gutter to keep your balance. If you do this, the gutter might break down. Do not attempt to repair any damages there if you?re uncomfortable using a ladder. Some tasks require help, so get some.

After you repair a gutter, you should double check to make sure it was done appropriately.
