How to Build an Outdoor Fountain

The following instructions will show you how to build an outdoor fountain. Before you start the construction process, prepare the following equipment.

Required Tools and Materials

Water pump
Rocks
Mesh
Twine or string
Flowers
Tub
Plants
Flower pots (minimum of two)
Tubing
Rubber
Chicken wire

Location Considerations

The fountain needs to be placed in a spot where people can see it clearly. It can be in the middle of the garden or other conspicuous spots. If you are going to put the fountain near some plants and flowers, make sure the vines don’t get in the way of the power and water pump connections. After determining the dimensions of the fountain, remove any plants or flowers that are in the way.

Step 1: Add the Water and Rocks

To build an outdoor fountain, set the basin / container in the desired location. Pour in the water (don’t fill it to the brim). Put the rocks in the water, stacking them on top of each other. Note: most use black rocks because they’re not as conspicuous. You can either paint them or look for some dark hued rocks. You can also use cement blocks.

Step 2: Arranging the Flower Pots

Turn one flower pot upside down and put it on top of the other. Create a hole in one of the flower pots (if there isn’t one already). Insert the water pump into the hole.

To build an outdoor fountain, you need to link the flower pots using the twine. Set the flower pots above the rocks you piled up. Put the mesh on so the water fill filter through.

Step 3: Configure the Water Pump and the Tubing

Insert the tubing through the flower pot’s hole. Put the rubber on the tubing. Put the tubing through the chicken wire. This will function as a platform to put in other rocks. Aside from the rocks and pebbles, you can also add some plants and flowers around the pots. Place them strategically to make it more aesthetically pleasing.

Tips and Warnings

When you build an outdoor fountain, always check the power outlet. Check the source if the water generated is enough. If you don’t know how to work with electrical components or water pumping mechanisms, get professional help.

The size of the rocks or cinder blocks depends on the size of your fountain. For a medium size fountain, 8 x 8 x 16 cinder blocks will be sufficient. If the fountain needs more water, use a hose to sprinkle in more water.

Every now and then check the water emerging from the fountain. If the flow is too much, check the mesh because it might be damaged. Don’t just dump the rocks in the fountain.

Take the time to design them. Grouping the rocks and pebbles by color will enhance its appearance. The same thing with the flowers; make sure the design complements the theme of your garden.

It takes some work to build an outdoor fountain. However, the results will be well worth the labor.
