How to Build a Paper Airplane

Understanding how to make a paper airplane is pretty easy. Even if you have never tried making one before, you’ll be flying these paper aircraft in no time.

Required Tools and Materials

Rectangular piece of paper (notebook or printing paper will be fine)
Crayons or colored pencils

Step 1

Set the paper on a table. Position it so one of the long edges faces you.

Step 2

Fold it in half lengthwise. When the two edges meet, create a crease with your finger.

Step 3

Fold the upper left corner of the paper’s top layer in a diagonal manner. Fold in the direction of the crease. Make a new crease with your finger when the edges meet. You will now have a triangular flap.

Step 4

Continue to make a paper airplane by flipping the paper over. Fold the top right corner of the paper diagonally. Fold this in a diagonal manner in your direction. The edge lines should meet up with the crease you created.

Step 5

Make another crease when the edges meet up. This is similar to what you did earlier.

Step 6

Hold the diagonal edge on the paper’s right side. Fold it in the direction of the crease you created. Make a crease when the edges match up.

Step 7

Turn over the paper. Fold the diagonal edge in the direction of the first crease. Create another crease. You will now have a triangle that has 90 degree angles.

Step 8

To make the wings, flip the paper over and repeat steps 6 and 7.

Step 9

Hold the paper plane along the first crease you created. Flare the wings out.

Step 10

Measure four to five inches off the plane’s nose. Cut a ½ inch rip on the plane’s bottom section. Make a rip of the same size half an inch behind this. Fold it up.

Step 11

Grab the paper plane along the tab. Throw the paper plane in an overhand, horizontal manner.

Tips and Warnings

The sharper the creases are, the better the flight trajectory. You can also try changing the location to see how it works. You should also experiment with various paper sizes and weights. These can have an effect on the paper’s flight. But if the paper is too thick, it may be difficult to make a sharp crease.

After you make a paper airplane, you can color it using crayons and colored pens or pencils. Just make sure you don’t put too much pressure when coloring. If you do, it could tear the paper up.
