How to Fix Rim Damage

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

The rim is connected to the wheel, which is the main contact point of theFix Rim Damage vehicle to the ground. For this reason, it is very much close to all kinds of damages, the most common of which are scratches. This kind of damage can be acquired by driving over debris or by running into a curb. Instead of buying a new set of expensive rims for such minimal damage, it is a better alternative to learn how to fix rim damage.

Materials Needed

This job is moderately challenging. The important materials needed for this one include a primer, a high-gloss clear lacquer and wheel lacquer. Aside from these, you also need a masking tape, paint thinner and Bondo putty. In addition, prepare also a bucket of water, a sponge and dish soap. You must also have 400-grit, 600-grit and 1,200-grit sandpaper. Lastly, bring in a lint-free washcloth and masking paper.

Steps

Before fixing the damage, clean the wheel first using a mixture of dish soap and water. Dip the sponge and then wipe off grease and dirt. Rinse thoroughly and then wipe it dry. Put a significant amount of paint thinner on the lint-free cloth and scrub it right onto the scratched part of the rim. This will remove dirt, wax and other unwanted elements. After this step, wash the rim twice and then dry it with a clean cloth.

Stick some masking tape in the surrounding areas of the scratch. In case the damage is found at the edge of the rim, tuck the tape underneath to prevent damaging the tire. Just to be sure that the entire scratch is to be repaired, leave at least ¼-inch of the area surrounding the scratch without tape. Use the 400-grit sandpaper on the scratch until slight grooves appear.

Put some Bondo putty enough to cover the scratch. After that, smooth out the area with 600-grit sandpaper. By doing this, the putty is pushed down deep into the scratches to produce a smooth surface. Allow it to dry for about 5 minutes. Use the 600-grit sandpaper once again and then wait for another 5 minutes.

Get the masking paper and use it to cover the entire tire as well as other nearby parts of the car. This can prevent paint or lacquer from spreading to other areas. Apply a thin layer of paint or lacquer to the area you are repairing. Once the paint dries, use the 1,200-grit sandpaper on it. If the Bondo putty becomes visible, spray another layer of paint to conceal it. After drying, wash the entire wheel once again using water and soap.

Spray clear-gloss lacquer. Do it approximately 8-inches away from the repaired part. Repeat this five times. Slowly remove the masking tape and the masking paper from the rim before leaving it to dry overnight.

How to Fix a Trunk Latch

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

If your trunk latch is broken and you want to fix a trunk latch in an easy Fix a Trunk Latchand cheaper way then you can follow these easy steps to do the repairs yourself.

Procedure to Fix a Trunk Latch

If you notice that the trunk latch is dirty or corroded, you can spray some penetrating oil into the latch to soften the dirt and corrosion. You can spray some lithium grease into the trunk latch to easily move it anytime. Never ever use any kinds of silicone spray to fix a trunk latch because the substance can collect into the air cleaner of the car that can cause contamination of the sensors.

If you notice that the cable that is connected to the release mechanism inside the trunk latch is frayed or stretched, you need to readjust the cable and try to know the cause why it is frayed or stretched. Do not pull the cable too hard because it can cause overstressing. If you feel that the cable is gritty or grainy, you can try spraying it with an aerosol spray lubricant to lubricate the cable and fix a trunk latch. Penetrating oil is not suited to fix the problem since it is too light.

Use a spray that has nozzle and place the end of the nozzle to the end of the case that contains the cable. Put a clean cloth to the area where the nozzle and cable meets and spray the lubricant into the cable. Spraying the lubricant steadily into the cable will allow the lubricant to be squeezed down in between the cable case and the cable.

You can also use an air compressor when spraying lubricant into the cable since the pressurized force of the air compressor can let the lubricant go deep down into the casing. This method to fix a trunk latch is applicable to any kinds of cable that the vehicles are using at present and the list includes the majority of the cables used for heater-control.

If you see that the cable is experiencing some corrosion or that the steel threads are pushing out, you need to get the cable replaced immediately to fix a trunk latch. It’s no good to fix the cable since it can snap anytime. Once the cable is already replaced, apply some lubricant into the newly attached cable in a regular basis to maintain it in a good working condition. Good maintenance of the trunk latch can prevent serious problems to occur.

Reminder

When you try to fix a trunk latch, always keep in mind to never use any kinds of silicone spray. The reason is that some substances of the silicone spray can diffuse into the air cleaner of the car and may cause contamination to the sensors.

Step 1

Begin by slackening the soft top so you can move it without difficulty. Cut some duct tape. Locate the tear and put the duct tape below the top. Bring the torn pieces together.

Step 2

Get the polyester thread and sew the edges. Hold the fabric about five millimeters from the edge. You need to sew in a z pattern. To repair a soft roof on a convertible car, make sure the slanted section can be seen from the top. The flat section will be visible below.

Step 3

Pull the stitches so the space is less than a centimeter for each of the seam’s edge. If you sew the parts properly, only the gray adhesive section will be visible.

Step 4

Get the door and window sealant. Put a large bead at the cut. Make sure the bead is big enough so that it seals everything. Make sure the stitches and needles are also covered by the glue.

Step 5

The next step to repair a soft roof on a convertible car is to cut more duct tape. You’ll need to put the duct tape over the joint before the sealant dries up.
