They generally work best on darker-colored vehicles, but they work well enough on vehicles with lighter colors.

To employ a paint repair touch-up kit in how to repair paint chips, all it takes is following a few easy steps. First, the area of the car which one intends to touch up has to be cleaned up thoroughly. Next, all protective layers that are present should be removed, wax products included. One should make sure that the car is not hot to the touch; it should be cool, but not cold as ice. To make certain that the paint will stay put and won’t separate after application, it must be applied in a temperature of above 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

After the area has been prepared, one should then apply the touch-up kit according to the instructions that come with it. There are two steps involved in this procedure; the area is first applied with touch-up paint (more than one coat may be needed depending on the extent of the damage), and then with a protective layer. A considerable amount of patience would be required waiting for the paint to cure fully, as it may take a period of 24 hours up to 7 days to do so. It will, however be instantly durable and water resistant upon application.

Should the paint chip or scratch have any trace of rust, it must be removed before the touch-up paint is applied to the car. Touching up over a rusted area is not advisable, and the scratch would not be properly repaired. If one proceeds to do so anyway, they should consult their paint touch-up kit supplier to recommend a product they might be able to use, but it is better to save one the trouble by just going through the proper procedure.
