The use of asphalt shingles as part of a roofing system offers people a number of advantages such as easier installation and inexpensive costs. It is better to use this kind of roof in places where the climate is cool rather than in warmer regions. No matter how durable this particular type of roof, various factors can still cause significant damage to it such as attic ventilation and thermal shock. It is easier to fix these problems by learning how to do roof repair with asphalt shingles.

Materials Needed

Although this task is moderately challenging, things are much easier if you have the following important materials. Prepare new asphalt shingles, tin snips and a pry bar. Aside from these, you must also have a hammer, roofing nails as well as roofing cement.

Steps

Before you start fixing the asphalt shingles, check and determine how many shingles need replacement. To do this, try to look for visible sign such as leaking, cracked shingles and warped shingles. Get the pry bar and then use it to remove one by one the nails holding the damaged shingles in place. Aside from checking the damaged pieces, it is also good to look for possible damages and rotting underneath the shingles that are positioned two rows above them.

After removing the nails, pull the damaged part slowly. In case they are still difficult to remove, you may want to double-check damaged shingles for nails that you may have missed out. Shingles are designed in threes, which means that you need to remove three shingles when one is damaged. Likewise, you need to replace them with three shingles.

For damages that are not the bid, you may want to remove the damaged part only. To do this, remove the nails holding that particular area and then slowly remove. Apply roofing cement on the unfinished edge of the replacement shingles. Put them in place. Be sure that they are fixed properly with the rest of the other shingles. Once in place, never forget to put a nail in every shingle. It is good to push the nails right into the very same holes where the old nails went through.

Cover each nail with roofing cement. Likewise, fill the old holes left by the old nails with cement as well. Use roofing cement to fill the voids and gaps that may possible cause leaking.

Additional Tips and Other Helpful Information

When buying replacement shingles, it is necessary to purchase items that are of similar lifespan and thickness. Of course, they must also have the same texture and color. Avoid working on top of the roof when it is wet and damp. These conditions may often lead to accidental slipping.
