How to Build a Smoke House

Nothing cures fish and meat like a smoke house. Even if you have very little experience, you should have no problems when you try to build a smoke house.

Required Tools and Materials

Circular saw
Fasteners (screws and nails)
Chalk line
Angle irons
Cast iron pan
Propane burner
Expanded steel
Sheet steel for the roof
Strap hinges
Boards (no tongue)
2 x 8 inch by 8 foot (20 or more)

Step 1

Get ten 2 x 8 x 8 boards ready. Divide them so five will be for the back and the rest for the door. You can utilize the other boards for the scrap hinges, sheet steel and the framing.

Step 2

Put the side parts together with the clamp. The tongue (which has been taken out) will be facing the back. Set a chalk line so the panel dimensions are six inches up front and 5 feet 9 inches to the
panel’s top back.

Step 3

Repeat the previous step for the next panel.

Step 4

Continue to build a smoke house by sawing the rest of the boards to 1 and half by 1 and half inch sizes. This will be used for the framing.

Link a piece to the interior bottom of the panel. Join the other to the top interior. Attach another part along the panel’s interior back. This should be along the bottom and top.

Step 5

Make the back panel so it is 5’9” tall. Secure the sides and back panel together. Square all the panels.

Step 6

Make braces with widths of 3 1/8 inches. Have the outside corners notched and place a wood piece on it. This wood should be of the same size. Repeat with the front opening’s bottom.

Step 7

Create shelf supports measuring 1 ½ x 1 1/2. Place them eight inches off the floor. Distribute the supports fourteen inches apart.

Step 8

Make the door using the same process as you did the panels. Ensure that it will fit between the parts that frame the opening.

Step 9

Put the roof on using the screws. Keep a small gap at the top. You can make the shelves using the expanded metal. Use a solvent to eliminate any oil present on the metal.

Step 10

Now you just have to produce the smoke. Set the cast iron pan at a propane burner. Put hardwood in it and it should work out fine. After you build a smoke house, you can start using it immediately. Aside from meat, you can use it for salmon, turkey, and other food.
